Fine Art Friday: Ronald Ophuis

I recently came across the work of Ronald Ophius in Elephant Magazine and was moved by both the grim subject matter and the variety of his work. If you follow the Fine Art Friday posts at all, you will pick up on the fact that I am a huge fan of dark subject matter and art that makes the viewer uncomfortable. Harsh truths about the animal-like instincts of humans in times of conflict painted in gritty, splotchy paint will always keep my attention. Reminiscent of Leon Golub, David Becker, and Francis Bacon, you can check out more of his work on his Upstream website HERE.

Video: The Doppelgangaz - "Oh Well"

New York-based underdog crew The Doppelgangaz continue to put out quality music with a throwback vibe, touches of jazz, and honest verses in anticipation of their upcoming album "HARK" on March 12. They just dropped the second release and video for the project entitled "Oh Well", which see's them rocking verses on a farm in front of cows for a statement about making the best of your situation regardless of your place in the world. Check it out and look out for more from these guys!

Listen: AbnormL Injustice - "Life Is The Main Event" Album

Kind of a left field post here, but I just came across the work of AbnormL Injustice and was digging the sounds of a fellow experimental, instrumental producer who takes a more mellow approach to his music. Using irregular sounds and some faithful throwback and jazzy samples, he brings a nice mix of beats to zone out with on his latest album "Life Is The Main Event". Here's hoping for more from the LA-based producer in the years to come!

Listen: Stretch X Bobbito Radio Show "Pop-Up Special"

The Stretch Armstrong Show hosted by Bobbito special POP-UP show originally aired on 02.22.13.  Prior to their guest appearance at the New Museum, Stretch Armstrong and Bobbito did a "one-time" only "pop up" show on their original time slot, day and station 89.9 WKCR FM NYC. Listen and observe a true hip hop legend in action. In the heyday of rap, lyrical freestyles, grimey beats, and improvisation were the real test of someone's cred and the archives of the Stretch and Bobbito broadcasts showcase these skills that are sorely missed today's faulty swag-based rap scene.
